Who is Mark Westbrook?

Mark Westbrook's journey to becoming an internationally renowned hairdresser is a story of determination, resilience and passion. Growing up in one of London’s roughest neighbourhoods, Mark faced early challenges but was driven to carve out a different path.

Starting his career as an apprentice to Heinz Schumi at his bustling London salon, Mark studied the Vidal Sassoon cutting style, that would shape his future. After honing his skills at prestigious institutions like Schumi and Harrods, Mark's desire for growth took him to Paris, where he immersed himself in the city's vibrant fashion scene before moving to Jersey. These formative experiences helped refine his artistry and broaden his understanding of the global beauty industry.

Returning to London, Mark joined Tony & Guy in Richmond, where he became the highest-grossing hairdresser within three months. At 29, Mark opened his own salon in Kew Gardens and his business thrived attracting clients from all over the world. His talent caught the eye of John Sahag, the creator of the "Rachel" haircut, who invited him to study Dry Cutting at his prestigious New York salon. John gave Mark the missing link of the technique, and then Mark spent two years refining his craft before becoming European Art Director for Sahag bringing the revolution to London.

Throughout his career, Mark travelled the world, teaching, elevating his salon and staff, and making a lasting impact on the global hairdressing community. His dedication to both innovation and education has left a legacy in the industry.

Why Dry Carving™?

Dry Carving™ is a unique hair cutting technique that enhances the natural movement of hair. Think of it as cutting with your fingers instead of blades.

Dry Carving™ involves understanding growth pattern, growth disorder, speed of growth, equalising weight and weight distribution around the head. Recognizing the areas where hair grows faster, slower, thicker, denser, finer or less dense, and using this knowledge to create a fluid, harmonious shape. The hair naturally falls to its longest point, but is also drawn into denser areas of growth.

By eliminating weight from these denser areas of the lower crown to nape, Carvers create continuity and movement, "aerating" the hairstyle for a more natural volume.

Dry Carving™ combines an understanding of geometry, posture, and fluid movement; like dancing. If the Carver is in harmony with the movement, the hair will flow and come alive with them. This approach treats hair like fabric, with different textures—coarse, medium, and fine—requiring different cutting patterns, just as linen, cotton, and silk need different handling. Each haircut is entirely unique, tailored to the individual’s hair type, texture, and growth patterns.

Unlike traditional wet cutting, where hair is cut section by section, Dry Carving™ involves cutting strand by strand in one fluid motion by way of “the dance”. This results in a hairstyle that moves with the natural flow of the hair, providing greater vitality and longevity.

Cutting hair using the Dry Carving™ technique holds its shape longer, growing into itself, before losing shape, usually after 2-3 months (can be longer), while wet cuts can lose shape within 6 weeks.

Dry Carving™ takes more time to execute and lasts longer, meaning clients need fewer visits, therefore Carvers should charge more for this technique to account for the additional time required and the longer intervals between cuts, as well as the time invested in training.
